Ovarian cysts are small sac-like structures that are surrounded by a thin membrane and develop within or on the surface of an ovary. They are usually benign and do not cause any problem, but sometimes they grow in size and then rupture, which is known as the bursting of ovarian cysts. Bursted ovarian cyst refers to the bursting or rupture of cysts or small fluid filled sacs, that develop within or on the surface of the ovaries. Women have two ovaries that release an egg in each month during their reproductive age. An egg is usually formed within a small structure, known as a follicle, which usually bursts when the egg is released. An ovarian cyst is developed when either the follicle fails to release the egg or when even after releasing the egg, the follicle does not burst. Generally, the follicle fails to release the egg due to a deficiency of the luteinizing hormone.
Most of the ovarian cysts are small and harmless and do not cause any problem. Sometimes they shrink in size and then subside on their own. However, in some instances, ovarian cysts may grow in size and ultimately burst, releasing blood and other contents accumulated within them. Such a situation may produce some severe symptoms that demand immediate medical attention.
Symptoms of Bursted Ovarian Cyst
An agonizing pain in the lower abdomen and excessive vaginal bleeding not related to menstruation, are the common symptoms of a bursted ovarian cyst. The severe pain can be felt throughout the entire pelvic region and is generally greater than the normal pain experienced during regular menstruation. The pain results due to the spilling of the contents of a cyst in the abdominal cavity caused by its rupture, which cause inflammation and irritation of the peritoneum (the thin lining of the abdominal cavity). The pain will be more severe if the cysts are very large in size. Vaginal bleeding would also be heavier than usual menstrual bleeding.
Irregular menstruation is another important symptom of a bursted ovarian cyst. So highly irregular periods with associated problems or complications like excessive weight gain, acne and emotional disturbances should be immediately attended to. As some of the ovarian cysts grow in size, they put pressure on the bladder, and may produce symptoms like a frequent urge to urinate and discomfort, while actual bursting of a cyst can cause acute pain during urination. Some other symptoms of bursting ovarian cysts are nausea, vomiting, dizziness and fainting. A woman may also experience some physical changes like weight gain and breast tenderness, in the case of ruptured ovarian cysts.
There can be several reasons behind the development of ovarian cysts. As for example, factors like genetics, irregularity in the normal ovulation process, a poor diet that contains large amounts of carbohydrates, junk foods and sugar in place of fresh vegetables and fruits, a weak immune system and resistance to insulin, are believed to play a crucial role in the development of cysts in the ovaries.
The treatment for bursted ovarian cysts depends on the severity of the condition and size of the cysts. However, bursting of the cysts is not a life threatening condition. Nevertheless, it needs immediate attention, as the formation of ovarian cysts can sometimes lead to infertility. So if you have observed any of the symptoms of ovarian cyst, then it is time to consult your physician to avoid agonizing pain, bleeding and the several other complications associated with the bursting of ovarian cysts.
